The Protracted North American Enterprise Migration To VoIP

Trials Grow, But Full Deployment Lags

by Lisa Pierce

Executive Summary

In North America, enterprises continue to increase their spending on voice over IP (VoIP) technologies but are withholding their complete commitments to wholly relying on them. Among the most frequently cited factors influencing VoIP migration are reliability and compatibility/interoperability. But other factors are also very important, including the broader business case and organizational issues. Communications-centric companies that have successfully overcome these challenges report the highest rates of current deployments. Adoption varies widely by industry, but it is more pronounced among large multinationals. Other communications-intensive companies find that the wide diversity of their locations pose connectivity challenges that adversely affect the business case of a complete companywide migration, so they are deploying VoIP in stages.
