February 7, 2006 Rapid eLearning Creation Tools Become Hot Technologywith Kyle McNabb, Lucy Fossner |

This is an excerpt
Rapid eLearning tools — used today to author about one-third of all eLearning content — enable easy-to-create content through the use of Microsoft PowerPoint or templates enhanced by rich media components. Often authored by the subject matter experts (SMEs) and an instructional designer, rapid eLearning content encompasses learning modules and fills an immediate learning need, has a limited shelf life, and doesn't require great depth for learning mastery. Three categories of tools support rapid eLearning content development: 1) rapid development tools that exploit PowerPoint capabilities; 2) live virtual learning applications; and 3) template-based course and game development tools. The need for rapid eLearning will increase as businesses demand that learning keep pace with the speed of business and younger employees increasingly desire to learn within their work environment. It's important to note, however, that while rapid eLearning content will continue to grow and become more intuitive, it will not replace the longer more in-depth content that requires learners' deeper study, discussion, and interaction.
