Executive Summary

Microsoft's platform for composite applications comprises Windows Server, BizTalk Server, SharePoint Portal Server, SQL Server, Microsoft Operations Manager, Visual Studio .NET, and InfoPath — its new XML forms environment. BizTalk Server and its tools are strong for creating flow-based applications using Web services, as is InfoPath for creating user interfaces for those applications. Windows Server 2003 provides a strong architectural foundation. The platform's major weakness is its complexity — the divisions and overlaps between Microsoft's tools create costly complexity. In addition, the Microsoft platform products are only available on Windows, which makes them unattractive to shops using Unix and other operating environments.
