Executive Summary

The chief information security officer (CISO) role in an organization has evolved beyond recognition in the past few years. Today, most CISOs have decreasing responsibility for day-to-day security operations and a greater level of participation in strategic business decisions. Today's CISO plays a pivotal role not only in defining technical standards and security policies, but also in assuring customers of the security of their data and validating security controls to regulators. Many CISOs are struggling with this transition because they have been given these responsibilities without any real authority or visibility within their organizations. They also need a new set of skills to successfully fulfill their responsibilities. After talking to many successful CISOs of global organizations over the past year, Forrester identified seven habits that make them effective in their role.
