Software AG's recent acquisition of webMethods makes it the fourth-largest vendor in our evaluation, giving the vendor a potential advantage in R&D, installed base, and possibly more dimensions that affect competitiveness. webMethods was a relatively new player in the human-centric BPM market, but it's making a good effort — and it shows. Still, webMethods has some work to do before it can compete with the leading pure-play BPM vendors in this market. Its acquisition by Software AG will accelerate the pace by providing more resources for the product team to draw on.
