Spend Analysis: Key App, Few Vendors

Spend Management Suite Vendors Buying Up Independents

by Andrew Bartels

with Laurie M. Orlov, Natalie Lambert

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

Automated spend analysis is emerging as a key software application (or service) for helping companies understand which employees buy what from which vendors, with benefits of identifying sourcing opportunities and tracking employee purchasing and compliance with sourcing policies. Five software vendors have developed analytical tools for interpreting invoices, purchase orders, and spend data and classifying that data by product and supplier. Acquisitions by sourcing vendors (Ariba, Emptoris, Ketera Technologies, and Verticalnet Software) have narrowed the field of independent software vendors (ISVs) to one (Zycus), with further acquisitions likely. Companies seeking an automated spend analysis solution should choose among these five vendors, but recognize that further changes in the landscape are likely.
