The shift from decentralized and federated IT organizations to centralized structures has accelerated during the past year. In a recent survey of 518 European IT and business executives, Forrester found that, in 2005, 71% of European firms describe their IT shops as centralized, compared with 64% in 2004. This trend parallels an increase in the number of firms claiming that a centralized vendor management function oversees IT, from hardware to services purchases. The result? Over the past year, strong central IT teams have given business units (BUs) less influence over IT decisions: 32% of firms claim that their BUs are heavily involved at early stages of IT infrastructure projects, compared with 50% of firms in 2004.
