In Forrester's Business Technographics® July 2005 North American And European Enterprise Infrastructure And Data Center Survey, we found that regulatory compliance is the top initiative for North American IT organizations, which overall are focused on upgrading existing technologies and capabilities rather than prioritizing new technologies. One new technology, server virtualization, is showing strong adoption, with 29% of firms having already deployed the technology and 61% of these users planning to increase deployments in the next 12 months. For PCs, firms tell us that desktops are still more popular in purchase plans than laptops, and firms are predominantly using a four-year replacement cycle. Eleven percent of firms are planning major investments in data center systems management, while 10% plan major investments in client systems management. Use of wireless LAN technology by firms continues to grow, but other LAN technologies like 10-gigabit Ethernet and port-based authentication lag in interest and adoption.
