June 9, 2009 TechRadar™ For SRM Professionals: Database And Server Data Security, Q2 2009Database Monitoring Tools Thrive; Classification Tools Try To Surviveby Andrew Jaquith |
|
This is an excerpt
The risks of theft, corruption, and abuse have made securing data stored on servers and in databases much harder. To help security and risk professionals plan their next decade of investments in server data security, Forrester investigated the current state of eight important technologies: centralized key management, data classifiers for security, data discovery scanners, data obscurity tools, database encryption, database monitoring and protection, outbound Web application filtering, and tape and backup encryption. None of these technologies are a panacea, but chief information security officers (CISOs) will derive significant value from many of them through the medium-term planning horizon. Forrester expects that brute-force technologies like encryption will remain popular, while escalating mandates will make monitoring technologies an increasingly attractive option. Data discovery and classification technologies, by comparison, won't prove their value until enterprise business units, information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals, and CISOs align their interests, consolidate vendors, and cut costs.
