The risks of theft, corruption, and abuse have made securing data stored on servers and in databases not only more important and relevant to businesses than ever — but also much harder. To help vendor strategy professionals properly time their investments for development and partnership in this critical area of security, Forrester investigated the state of maturity of eight important technologies: centralized key management, data classifiers for security, data discovery scanners, data obscurity tools, database monitoring and protection, database encryption, outbound Web application filtering, and tape and backup encryption. Our analysis reveals that brute-force technologies like encryption will remain popular, while escalating mandates will make monitoring technologies an increasingly attractive option. Data discovery and classification technologies, by comparison, won't prove their value until enterprise business units, information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals, and CISOs align their interests, consolidate vendors, and cut costs.
