Executive Summary

Offshore outsourcers excel at traditional development processes, yet Agile processes, and particularly Scrum, can address some core weaknesses that are inherent in offshore projects. The same can apply to captive offshore IT teams working for US and European companies. Companies turn to offshore firms to save money and improve quality by leveraging the outsourcer's process rigor. However, business users, who rarely communicate with offshore teams directly, often complain that the resulting software doesn't meet their needs. Scrum's emphasis on team collaboration and short, iterative development cycles can address many of these issues and improve the way that offshore development projects run. Many offshore developers have eschewed Agile processes, citing incompatibilities with their process-oriented and document-driven approaches. Companies that use offshore teams should challenge this view and consider adopting Scrum techniques to remain competitive and meet customers' needs.
