Executive Summary

Not content to rest on its laurels as the dominant provider of enterprise networking gear, Cisco has launched multiple initiatives to extend its reach. Using its financial resources and M&A expertise and setting its vision on "the network as the platform," Cisco will push into collaboration, video distribution, the data center, Social Computing, and other markets. In these software-dominated arenas, it will face much stronger competition than the "seven dwarfs" of the network business. On balance, we judge Cisco's strategy to be a sound one and expect one or more of its new-market bets to pay off handsomely.
