VeriSign Takes On Supply Chain Collaboration

VeriSign Acquires Retail Solutions And Partners With WWRE

by Christine Spivey Overby

with Noha Tohamy, Sean Meyer

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

Last week, VeriSign announced the acquisition of Retail Solutions for $24 million, and a partnership with the WorldWide Retail Exchange (WWRE). With this one-two punch, VeriSign establishes itself as a low-cost alternative for point-of-sale (POS) visibility, competing head-on against entrenched syndicated providers ACNielsen and Information Resources, Inc. (IRI). VeriSign positions these moves as part of a larger vision to support the integration of POS, master item attributes, and product movement data. Forrester believes that VeriSign's success hinges on solid positioning and technology support for POS data and analytics. The larger vision — although bold — sounds like over-promising in an industry still trying to absorb other massive projects like global data synchronization (GDS) and RFID.
