Executive Summary

Forrester evaluated four leading enterprise instant messaging (IM) products across 69 criteria and found that IBM and Microsoft established themselves as Leaders thanks to their overall functionality and robust integration with key technology partners. Jabber proved to be a Leader based on its ability to scale up in very large implementations and strong capabilities in persistent chat, but it lacks extensive integration with business applications, telephony infrastructure, and teleconferencing and videoconferencing offerings. Jive Software came in as a Contender based on its open source support and vision for integration into a larger collaboration offering.
