Web Services Landscape: Four Centers Of Gravity

Fit Web Services Specialist Vendors Into Your Overall IT Vendor Strategy

by Randy Heffner

with Kimberly Q. Dowling

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

Numerous XML and Web services specialist vendors are developing important and innovative intellectual property for XML-based applications. Forrester sees continuing growth for them during the next two to five years. At the same time, these vendors face a long-term challenge to play in a market landscape dominated by four major centers of gravity for enterprise application infrastructure: application platforms, management platforms, identity management platforms, and attack protection platforms. The major vendors in each of these four centers of gravity have their eyes on XML and strategies set for Web services, and they will take much of the same ground now occupied by the specialist vendors. Specialist vendors must work their strategies in and around the major platforms. IT shops should stay tactical when considering Web services specialist products, but not be afraid to jump in where there are near-term benefits.
