IT management needs vary according to company-size segment, and distribution of the IT management software market is 77% to enterprises and 23% to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in 2009. While the greatest difference in buying drivers is between enterprises and SMBs, small businesses themselves buy a different selection of IT management solutions, compared with medium-sized businesses, and they buy them for different reasons. The size and complexity of IT management solutions are more modest for smaller companies, with the endpoints often being more important than the server systems in terms of management and the IT staff in smaller businesses having a higher business technology (BT) positioning expectation. Software vendors traditionally selling their wares into the enterprise segment often have trouble adapting their products and go-to-market strategies to the SMB market.
