In a move sure to send shockwaves throughout the software world, IBM announced plans to buy FileNet for $1.6 billion — IBM's third largest software acquisition ever. Many customers may be truly perplexed, given the high degree of overlapping functionality between these head-to-head competitors. This acquisition is compelling for four key reasons: 1) FileNet's undisputed leadership in document-centric business process management suites (BPMS) fills a giant hole for IBM; 2) the two companies' content offerings strengthen and fill gaps in both portfolios; 3) FileNet brings IBM an experienced compliance framework; and 4) IBM can better pursue a game-changing vision for bringing together people, processes, and information by integrating BPMS, enterprise content management (ECM), and collaboration, all supported by its service-oriented architecture (SOA) strategy. IBM has also tripped up its major competitors by taking FileNet off the table as more vendors contemplate their next moves into ECM and BPMS.
