Executive Summary

US information workers are feeling underappreciated. Forrester's most recent Workforce Technographics® study shows a deep divide between the recognition workers want and what they actually get from their employers. While many workers say their employers value teamwork, they're less certain their direct managers do. And despite the fact that the majority crave time and location flexibility in their careers, many don't get those freedoms. Who cares? Anyone who manages these people should care because as a highly educated and highly paid segment of the US workforce, retaining information workers as the economy recovers will get harder. In particular, we think information and knowledge management leaders trying to align technology investments with a changing workforce must learn to tap the self-interests of information workers to retain talent, improve productivity, and to drive workforce innovation.
