On September 28, 2009, Xerox announced the purchase of business process outsourcing company Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), in a deal valued at approximately $6.4 billion. Xerox's acquisition sends a clear signal about the strategic direction of the document processing services (DPS) market — that DPS providers must add higher-value capabilities that link to or combine with core business processes. The acquisition will deepen Xerox's channels for managed print services (MPS), infuse R&D and innovation into ACS customers, and provide more standard offerings for ACS's business process outsourcing (BPO) offerings. Xerox Global Services would also become the largest outsourced document capture provider. All in all, the acquisition has both obvious and subtle synergies and is an aggressive move from a company not known for dramatic moves in recent memory.
