XML and PDF-A will become the dominant document formats for archiving by 2008. The current prevalent archiving format standards, tagged image file format (TIFF) and portable document format (PDF), are too limiting because of the increasing need to support compliance and electronic discovery. TIFF and PDF are strongly focused on providing an electronic format that is equivalent in appearance to a physical document. But the need for physical equivalent reproduction will become less prevalent as the volume of digitally created documents skyrockets and enterprises address long-term records management needs.
