The entrance of Gen Y — the first "so-called" digital-native generation, into the workplace has been the subject of much research and debate. How has social media affected their work habits? Will they abide by corporate technology policies? Do companies need to provision collaboration and productivity tools to recruit and retain them? With the first of this cohort, born between 1980 and 2000, already climbing the corporate ladder we can begin to reflect on what the change for business actually has been.

For producers of collaboration and Web 2.0 technologies, this is a vital conversation. With business units and individual workers having more of a say in technology purchases that affect their productivity, it is important to get a sense of what the rank and file is doing. Doing so can help with the design and marketing of future collaboration tools.
