Description:
To assess the state of the managed global MPLS services market and see how facilities-based service providers of these services to MNCs stack up against each other, Forrester evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of nine large international network operators that offer these services in at least three geographic regions. They were compared against 56 high-level evaluation criteria that measure provider capabilities related to current offer, strategy, and market presence.
Managed global MPLS services transfer the responsibility for monitoring the wide-area network (WAN) service on an end-to-end basis from corporate IT to the service provider. When provided by a network operator, this always includes their international WAN, access and egress, and the demarcation devices or routers that interface with the provider's service. The provider monitors the customer's end-to-end network performance, detects and identifies the sources of network performance troubles, and reports external as well as network-related problems to the customer. Depending on the type or level of managed global MPLS service purchased, the service provider often owns as well as maintains and manages the customer's edge routers.
