Summary

IT organizations are continually challenged to deliver business projects on time, on budget, and to business satisfaction. At the same time, CIOs struggle to both maximize and communicate IT's value contribution to the firm. CIOs institute a program management office (PMO) to enable quality project results that meet business value goals and maximize the effectiveness of IT's project delivery. However, the results are often disappointing. Project outcomes fall short of business expectations, IT's project track record is perceived poorly, and the PMO is viewed as not improving the situation. Now may be the time to rebuild or relaunch the PMO — validating goals and processes with metrics that take into account stakeholder interests.
