    ForecastView Spreadsheet

October 7, 2015Vishal Varshney, Vikram Sehgal

The emergence of smartphones has significantly impacted the Internet access landscape around the world. In developed countries, mobile online penetration is quickly catching up as existing online users take up the mobile Internet, but in developing markets, mobile plays the role of first-access device for the majority of the population. In markets such as India, Indonesia, and Nigeria, “mobile-only” Internet adoption will be the main driver for online access. We forecast that global online penetration will grow from 44% in 2015 to almost 59% by 2020. This forecast estimates the total online population and mobile (mobile phones and/or tablets) online population across five regions and 55 countries. It also breaks out the total online population for each country by age groups, and it estimates the “mobile-only” online population across 22 key markets.

REPORT: Forrester Research Mobile Application Spending Forecast, 2014 To 2019 (US)

    ForecastView Spreadsheet

    February 2, 2015Vikram Sehgal

US mobile app downloads represented 17% of the global total in 2014, and revenue from US app downloads and in-app purchases accounted for 20% of all worldwide spending, at $6 billion. As the largest global market for mobile apps, the US will have a large impact on the mobile application ecosystem for years to come. The strong presence of Apple smartphones and tablets in the US relative to Android and other OS devices has a strong effect on app revenue, as Apple users tend to download more apps and spend more per application on in-app purchases than users of other devices. While increasing ownership rates of smartphone and tablet devices will drive much of the growth in app downloads and spending, the average number of app downloads per device will also increase at an average annual rate of 5% through 2019. The forecast breaks out smartphone and tablet app users by those who use apps, download free apps, and download paid apps at least monthly, as well as monthly smartphone and tablet app users, across 23 categories of mobile applications.

REPORT: Forrester Research Online Retail Forecast, 2014 To 2019 (Latin America)

    ForecastView Spreadsheet

    January 22, 2015Vikram Sehgal

eCommerce in the Latin American markets covered in this forecast (Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina) will continue to enjoy robust growth for years to come. Compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of online retail spending will approach 20% in each country through 2019, driven primarily by rapidly expanding online buyer populations: In Mexico, where online sales represent less than 1% of total retail spending in 2014, the number of people buying retail goods online will more than double by 2019. Mobile and tablet retail sales will also represent an increasingly large share of the total eCommerce market in each country. While Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina lag behind other emerging markets today in mobile commerce maturity, retail purchases on smartphones and tablets will comprise more than one-third of all online retail sales in each country by 2019.
