Once solely the purview of governments, space-based systems are now widely used by the private sector to support use cases ranging from earth observation, asteroid mining, climate data tracking, and internet connectivity in remote areas. The emergence of the global space economy introduces new cybersecurity risks and challenges as the deployment of these systems skyrockets. Today’s security and risk (S&R) leaders must become competent in the fundamentals of space-based systems and the corresponding threats and risks. This report reviews the cybersecurity implications of space-based systems and helps S&R pros prepare their organizations for these emerging technologies.
