Summary

Employee learning is an expected component of most corporate organizational development programs, either as classroom learning or a blend of classroom and online courses. But organizations are slow to adopt and apply these tools. Why is this? Within a corporate environment, learning too often takes place in isolation, disconnected from the work of employees. Today, advances in technology and integrations make it possible for employees to experience learning when they need it, complete their work more efficiently and effectively, and support the business technology (BT) agenda. But technology alone can't solve the problems with learning engagement. Top executives, all the way to the line managers, must believe in and promote a learning culture that maximizes the value of new technologies and is aligned with the mainstream business. To accomplish this, application development and delivery (AD&D) pros will have to work with HR and the lines of business to create embedded learning programs, which allow employees to learn quickly and apply learning immediately. In our competitive economy, winning companies will be the ones that create an environment that encourages employees to keep improving their learning through reflection, discussions, and technology-enabled, context-sensitive content.
