Electronic health records (EHRs) are mandatory systems of record in today's health information technology (HIT) ecosystem and drive the clinical workflow for most healthcare providers. But today's EHRs fail at the interoperability necessary for effective person-centered care. CIOs in these organizations look outside the traditional HIT ecosystem to close the gaps of interoperability and insight. From CRMs to cognitive engines, middleware, Health Level Seven International (HL7), and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), organizations are finding ways to work around the limitations of their EHRs.
