Summary

Data management has become as crucial as financial management to leading firms, but businesses grapple with data management platforms that can't respond fast enough to fickle customers and fluid markets. Big data has emerged as the new industry buzzword promising to help do more with more data and break down data silos. We examined this phenomenon and discovered that firms are 1) taking a pragmatic approach that focuses first on wringing value from internal data at a lower cost; and 2) implementing a new architecture we label "hub-and-spoke." This report explores this architecture and provides recommendations for exploiting the big data phenomenon using it. Enterprise architects and other technology strategists need this information to be equipped with options for flexibility and speed as they earn seats at the business strategy table.
