Public cloud storage isn’t a panacea, considering enterprise concerns about privacy, governance, availability, and unpredictable costs, but the basic opex cost model is attractive. Enterprises are increasingly demanding on-premises consumption-based pricing from both legacy and new vendors as part of new procurements. To help infrastructure and operations (I&O) pros get the most benefit from consumption-based storage, this report reviews the basic concepts and variations of this economic model, which intentionally mimics cloud pricing.
