Summary

A potentially challenging but important first step in establishing a best-practice sourcing strategy for telecommunications and mobility services involves identifying the current state of your IT/business technology (BT) operations, sourcing models, use cases, and management responsibilities and processes. Increasingly, user companies with distributed business operations are moving communications technology provisioning out of local business units and corporate procurement organizations and into their IT/BT sourcing practices. A growing number of these firms are also centralizing sourcing planning for advanced communications technologies like VoIP, unified communications (UC), and telepresence (room-based, desktop, and mobile video) to ensure the enforcement of corporate IT/BT technology standards — even though the different divisions or local business units will often continue to manage the budgetary planning and purchasing of the related hardware and services (implementation, maintenance, and management). This report is an update of "Use An Audit As A Starting Point For Defining A New Communications Technology Strategy" originally published on March 13, 2012.
