A single mobile device that allows calling over a mobile and wireless local area network (WLAN) network promises IT executives a potential way to decrease mounting mobile voice costs as minutes of use continue to increase. Firms face the challenge of ensuring a perfect storm in technology deployment — voice-ready WLAN, voice over IP (VoIP), and dual-mode capable devices as well as a wide variety of solutions — and need help to make it all work. Wi-Fi/cellular calling is a growing market, but it will take at least three years before it becomes mainstream. The majority of enterprises will not attain true readiness for voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) until 2011, and vendors are not likely to be too far ahead of that curve — firming up solutions and go-to-market plans. Vendors looking to capitalize on this market must clearly demonstrate the value of Wi-Fi/cellular solutions, outline a realistic timeline to deploy services, and integrate multiple products and services for their customers according to nascent standards.
