The leading mobile OS devices from Apple and Google have blossomed in enterprise settings because individuals want the same mobile devices and apps at work that they use in their personal lives. But neither supplier is prepared to truly service enterprises. This week, Apple forged a landmark partnership with IBM to bring mobile devices, applications, and services to enterprise customers. Apple and IBM have agreed to a development, sales, and service partnership that will enable IBM to: 1) globally sell and service Apple products as part of enterprise solutions; and 2) provide native iOS apps and infrastructure as IBM's preferred mobile solution for a wide range of applications and industry solutions. This report argues that the agreement improves the position of both parties relative to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft in the emerging race for digital platform supremacy. We expect Google and leading enterprise solutions providers to seek partnerships that offer a credible alternative.
