On January 22, 2014, VMware announced its intentions to acquire mobile management vendor AirWatch for approximately $1.5 billion. This move represents the third major mobile device management (MDM) acquisition over the last 12 months by a large IT vendor with an existing PC management or virtualization offering, and part of a larger trend of consolidation between PC and mobile management tools. This is the largest MDM acquisition to date and represents a sharp pivot in VMware's mobile strategy.
