Why Read This Brief

On September 9, 2013, Western Digital announced its acquisition of PCIe flash card specialist Virident Systems for $685 million. This comes fewer than three months after Western Digital's acquisition of solid-state drive (SSD) pioneer sTec for $340 million on June 24, 2013. While this isn't the imminent demise of disk-based storage, these acquisitions are significant since Western Digital is the current market share leader in hard-drive sales. While flash storage is still an emerging market, the time is right for enterprises to formulate their long-term flash strategies, or they risk being left behind by faster and more agile rivals. This report helps IT infrastructure and operations (I&O) professionals understand how Western Digital benefits from these acquisitions and what it means to the storage landscape and your own enterprise SSD and flash-storage strategy.
