Why Read This Brief

On April 15, 2014, Zebra Technologies announced its intent to purchase Motorola Solutions' enterprise business unit for $3.45 billion using cash and debt. This gives Zebra comprehensive asset tracking solutions, such as Zebra's RFID tags and bar code printers and Motorola's rugged bar code readers and handheld mobile computing devices. Zebra's cloud-based Zatar platform underpins its connected world solutions, often referred to as the Internet of Things. Internet of Things (IoT) solutions are particularly relevant in retail, healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics industries, which are the focus of the combined Zebra/Motorola Solutions organization. This report focuses on the implications of the acquisition and what it means to technology management executives evaluating and deploying connected world solutions.
