Why Read This Brief

A cascade of recent top management changes at business applications market leader SAP was a startling development for a company that has long been a symbol of stability and consistency in the technology sector. The moves came two weeks after SAP announced a decline in 2009 revenues following years of double-digit growth. The departure of CEO Leo Apotheker, however, was not so much a result of the lackluster financial performance as much as it was a growing discontent on the part of customers as well as employees. Supervisory board Chairman and SAP cofounder Hasso Plattner steps up with more visible involvement as he resolves to make SAP a "happy company" again. His restructured management team, the SAP executive board, features a lean configuration with two co-CEOs and a CFO, COO, and CTO. The changes are a step in the right direction, but earning back the confidence of its customers will not be easy.
