Summary

People must manage an exploding array of digital content that they create or are responsible for, both at work and at home. We call this collection the digital self, and it includes everything from reports for the boss to digital music to credit card bills and social media posts — all of the digital content, by and about individuals, created, mutual, received, or recorded. Managing the digital self has become increasingly difficult as individuals embrace multiple work and personal devices. Today's personal cloud tools for managing the digital self, such as services for file sync or notes, will evolve into a full ecosystem of services for the digital self in three phases: 1) satisfying simple needs, such as file sync; 2) services for the digital self, such as financial management; and 3) curated ecosystems, offering holistic sets of federated services. CIOs will have to contend with employees' desire to mix work and personal content using vendors that the organization has not selected and can't control.
