Summary

Smart Computing, the latest cycle of tech innovation and growth based on new technologies of awareness, analysis, and alternatives, began in 2008. Since then, a growing number of companies have embraced Smart Computing, optimizing process results in addition to the returns on their balance sheets. Using the InformationWeek (IW) 500's profile of "20 Great Ideas To Steal" as an indicator of trends in business adoption of technology innovation, the number of Smart Computing solutions featured have jumped dramatically year over year, with 11 of the 20 examples in 2010 being Smart Computing deployments. Indeed, the number of Smart Computing examples in the IW 500 report both exceeded and outpaced the growth of examples of either cloud computing and social/Web 2.0 solutions. We are still at the beginning of the Smart Computing cycle; tech vendors should reposition their offerings and refine their vertical industry capabilities to better ride the demand for such solutions as the Smart Computing cycle grows.
