Smartphones, connected cars, and car accessories enabled by the internet of things (IoT) are remaking the personal transportation experience. In this report, we analyze how smartphones are changing car use, why connected cars fall short of customer desires, and how retrofit "appcessories" create new options to engage drivers of existing cars. We show how product CTOs and CIOs at firms across the automotive ecosystem have an opportunity to create rich, engaging services based on IoT-enabled appcessories for existing cars and redefine customer engagement models.
