As mobile device usage continues its uptick — as do its associated carrier costs — many companies are looking at dual-mode devices that can make calls over both carrier cellular and local area wireless networks (WLAN). By using WLAN for mobile calling, businesses can realize greater returns on their investment in the existing WLAN while cutting the expense of cellular minutes of usage (MOU). The vendor landscape and technologies to bring Wi-Fi calling to the enterprise exist today, but IT operations should focus on bolstering their wireless networks and associated voice infrastructure now to be ready for implementation of voice over WLAN (VoWLAN), a step we will see many businesses take in the 2010 to 2011 time frame.
