Summary
Forrester's Enterprise And SMB Software Survey, North America And Europe, Q4 2008 revealed that software development teams are planning on pursuing and using open source software (OSS) and that cost-cutting is one of the driving forces behind this choice. OSS can offer value to software development in times of tight budgets. As OSS adoption rates rise, enterprise architects (EAs) should get involved in planning an OSS strategy, working to balance OSS's value against its freewheeling capabilities. EAs need to work to fully understand OSS's impact on their enterprise by attuning themselves with their software shop and documenting current and future OSS usage so that they can begin setting out a clear OSS policy for the future.
