European digital identity regulation aims to enable EU-wide digital identification by establishing a universal digital identity wallet. While there’s been significant progress, key issues need to be resolved. The first iteration of electronic identification, authentication, and trust services (eIDAS) had significant gaps and didn’t sufficiently address interoperability between regional ID systems. eIDAS 2.0 addresses the shortcomings of its predecessor while emphasizing interoperability, with provisions for the private sector to leverage eID capabilities. This report explores the standards and regulatory landscape, highlighting aspects relevant to technology leaders.
