Despite the IT infrastructure and operations (I&O) budget traditionally representing 70% of total IT spending and overall IT expenditure becoming a greater percentage over overall corporate spend, I&O executives have yet to embrace IT financial management. Not only is this to the detriment of I&O running a "tight ship" with its stewardship of the business's resources, there are potentially negative consequences from not justifying I&O's value, such as punitive outsourcing. It's time for I&O execs to stop making excuses. Your business expects — and depends — on your ability to make sound investment decisions. To do this, fully divest yourself from day-to-day operations, invest in IT financial management tools, and enlist the help from key direct reports and finance.
