EA leaders often struggle to clearly articulate how their practice creates value. Our research shows that EA teams operate under four archetypes: a technology focus, a solution focus, a capability focus, and a business focus. Each reflects a different way of serving stakeholders and shaping architectural outcomes. No one archetype is inherently more advanced; instead, the most effective EA practices draw on all four. High performers differentiate by selecting and combining the right archetype elements to meet enterprises’ evolving needs. EA leaders can use these archetypes to clarify positioning, align expectations, and build a practice that responds fluidly to changing business and technology priorities.
