Summary

No two countries are the same when it comes to retail payment habits in Europe. Unlike in the US — where most firms can offer their customers a uniform set of payment options — companies selling into European markets need to offer a customized set of payment alternatives that accommodate national behavior. Although most Europeans use cash and debit cards for in-person retail payments, checks remain common in France. Remote payment habits like bills and online payments vary even more by country. Whereas direct debits are used for bill payments across Europe and cards dominate online payments, Europeans also use giros, invoices, and online banking transfer systems.
