Summary

Business technology resiliency (BTR) tools such as backup have long been a part of traditional infrastructures, serving as a safety net for revenue-generating applications and systems. More business-critical data is now created in cloud environments such as software-as-a-service (SaaS), and public cloud compute services and traditional workloads are moving from on-premises data centers to the cloud. As they do, the role of BTR tools and providers will have to change rapidly, as these technology shifts are threatening their existence. In 2014 and the first half of 2015, Forrester analysts fielded over 150 inquiries related to data protection and resiliency from infrastructure and operations (I&O) professionals eager to move beyond basic backup toward new models like disaster-recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS). They want to smash backup, high availability, and disaster recovery management and technology silos and create integrated practices around resiliency. This report discusses five major problem areas I&O professionals must address to progress to BTR.
