Summary

Springboard Research witnessed strong uptake of the development of mobile "micro-apps" within Asia Pacific (AP) enterprises during 2010. The majority of these applications were driven by internal marketing department needs and developed primarily by third-party "boutique" software developers. As organizations continue to reduce their investments in in-house software development capabilities, outsourcing mobile application development has proved to be a necessity. However, Springboard Research cautions that whether outsourced or not, developing platform-specific, rich-client applications that are complex, fragile, and have limited capabilities for extensibility will pose significant long-term risks for organizations.
