Enterprise technology leaders must understand the risks and benefits of open-source AI (OS-AI) to know when and how to leverage it. Like all foundational software, AI has vibrant and diverse open-source communities that introduce innovation into the AI ecosystem which includes helper libraries, model training frameworks, tooling, inferencing formats, and pre-built models. Enterprises may be tempted to tap into open-source AI to reduce costs and/or access cutting edge innovations. However, all open-source software, AI or not, comes with risks, including lack of support, usage legal issues, and once high-flying open-source projects that stall out.
