Summary

Other than facilities-based telecommunications carriers, potential customers of nationwide, enterprise-class, WAN-centric VoIP services have relatively few alternatives. In contrast, the list of managed IP PBX service providers is quite extensive. Few providers today, however, offer both hosted VoIP and managed IP PBX services. Forrester is familiar with one company that does, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). With a heritage in large-scale IT outsourcing, this company uses an approach that is virtually 180 degrees opposite that of facilities-based providers in offering WAN services only as part of an integrated outsourced solution. Unlike telecommunications carriers, CSC has a long history of serving large organizations' LAN and PC requirements, and it applies many of the same processes and principles developed in that context to its hosted VoIP and managed IP PBX services. Large organizations interested in an outsourced IP telephony model should thus consider broadening the scope of their research, and add alternate suppliers including outsourcers like CSC to their hosted or managed VoIP request for proposal (RFP) services roster.
