Productization is a difficult discipline, but application development and delivery teams across a wide range of scenarios see it as an imperative. In some cases, productization helps teams that are too enmeshed with their customers; in others, it helps teams that are too distant from their customers. Productization, therefore, is an attempt to correct a structural defect that diminishes the value of software development for either the producer or the consumer. Ownership in a real sense (not just an exhortation to take ownership) is critical. To achieve success with productization, teams must maintain this balancing act across the innovation process.
